The Legal Launch Pad Programme

The Legal Launch Pad Programme is being run by the Black Lawyers Directory again in 2011 and is open to ethnic minority students. The BLD has this to say:

We received hundreds of applications for our 2010 Legal Launch Pad programme, with a deluge in the last few days before the closing date. Applications for the 2011 programme are now open and the deadline is 3pm on 30 November. The best tip for success is to ensure you read the guidelines and FAQs thoroughly, ensure you cover all the requirements and apply in plenty of time, avoiding the last minute rush when your application may miss the deadline or you may have insufficient time to collate and provide all the necessary documentation.

Video: The Benefits of Law Work Experience

This latest video is an interview with a University of Leicester graduate who talks about the benefits of his law work placement. Graham Smith discusses his placement with Shepherd Wedderburn LLP and what he got out of it.

Graham gives various reasons why getting some law work experience is so important, including helping with your decision-making about whether you would be happy working as a solicitor at a particular type of firm and also to act as a gateway through which you can secure a training contract.

The next up in the TSS video series is a series of professionally produced videos presented by Gail Porter which take an in depth look at a career as a solicitor. The videos include a wide variety of interviews with law students, trainee solicitors, graduate recruitment personnel, assistant/associate solicitors, law firm partners, and HR personnel.

The videos give a great insight into many aspects of life as a solicitor and trainee solicitor, as well as giving an idea of what firms will be looking for in their trainees and young solicitors. There is also some good advice for anyone seeking to secure a training contract.

Life of a Trainee Solicitor in a Regional Law Firm

Sometimes it can feel that all the attention of the legal world and the legal careers services is focused on the biggest firms, and particularly the London firms or the biggest firms in the other major cities.

However, there are many regional firms away from the major cities that offer great opportunities for trainee solicitors. A good example of this is Lanyon Bowdler in Shropshire which won the Lawcareers.net’s trainee solicitor award for “Best Recruiter – Small Firm” in 2009 for a second time. LB takes on two trainees a year who spend time in four different departments within the firm during their training contracts.
