A rare and interesting position as a paralegal to assist in private/white collar crime matters at Stephensons Solicitors, a leading crime practice in the Wigan and Manchester.

Main purpose of the job:

To support and assist fee earners in carrying out duties and, where appropriate, to deal with clients and their affairs in a cost effective manner.

Main key result areas:

Attending and advising clients where appropriate.
Provides guidance, support and training to other staff as required.
Assisting fee earners in the department in effective case management, including (but not exclusively) drafting pleadings, preparing instructions to counsel, arranging and attending conferences, letters of claim, statements, protocol steps, advocacy and attendance at Hearings, preparation of funding documents, requesting and returning relevant documents.
Control and management of work in progress ensuring that it is recorded and converted into paid profit costs under supervision and direction. Effective management of own time ensuring that non chargeable and chargeable hour targets are met under supervision and guidance.
Carrying out administrative duties as appropriate.
Compliance with client care and complaints procedures in order to minimise the risk of negligence and comply with Law Society rules.

Person specification:

Law degree with a minimum 2:1, or relevant work experience

Driving licence

The Black Lawyers Directory LLP Programme for 2012 has been announced and is now accepting applications. A great programme based on previous reports.

Higher than average numbers of law students and graduates are from BME backgrounds and yet they are less likely to find training contracts, pupillages and tenancies. Some of the stumbling blocks are that BME students (due to their family backgrounds and other evident disadvantages) are more likely to be less-prepared and less-informed about the different routes into the profession, what is required and the recruitment process. By the time they become aware of these, it may be too late along their career path, resulting in a waste of their talent, resources and time.
The aim of this scheme is to help prepare participants for the legal profession by increasing the likelihood of success, improving skills, providing information and raising aspirations via training workshops, coaching, mentoring and work placements.

One of the things that candidates for training contracts are most commonly advised to do is to research the firms they are applying to.

However, one of the most common things that lets candidates down with their applications is a lack of research. This does not mean candidates are ignoring the advice they are given, just that they are not doing enough research or using a wide enough range of research resources. Many candidates will research the basic information about firms in large directories such as Legal 500 or on large web directories such as LawCareers.Net. However, this is rarely enough.

This latest video is an interview with a University of Leicester graduate who talks about the benefits of his law work placement. Graham Smith discusses his placement with Shepherd Wedderburn LLP and what he got out of it.

Graham gives various reasons why getting some law work experience is so important, including helping with your decision-making about whether you would be happy working as a solicitor at a particular type of firm and also to act as a gateway through which you can secure a training contract.
