Training Contract Vacancies Announced at Government Legal Service

The Government Legal Service has recently announced that it has been given permission to continue with its trainee solicitor recruitment programme.

There will be a short window for applications between 1 July and 30 July and they will be taking on between 20 and 30 people across 8 government departments. These positions will be split between training contracts and pupillages.

Paralegal Vacancy and Possible Training Contract, Bury

AGI Solicitors in Bury have a vacancy for an experienced paralegal which may lead to a training contract with the firm subject to performance.

The firm has this to say about the position:

“Experience of Claimant RTA work with particular emphasis on credit hire and storage claims essential. Must be able to deal with own caseload. Applicants will demonstrate ability to exploit existing contacts within the field and to assist in developing the department.

Successful applicant will work closely with senior partner and will accordingly receive direct supervision and support. Small niche firm with excellent reputation. Excellent working environment with an emphasis on continuing professional development.”

A slightly unusual training contract vacancy has been announced by the College of Law in Bloomsbury. The vacancy is only open to College of Law students and graduates and is for a training contract in legal aid work. Work will be split between the College of Law’s legal advice centre at the London Bloomsbury Centre and Hodge Jones & Allen LLP solicitors in North London.

The closing date for applications is 30 June 2010.

Do You Want To Achieve Success With Your Training Contract Applications?

We are well and truly into the peak season for training contract applications. June and July are the two months in which most firms accept training contract applications.

Deadlines do vary however and can be subject to change so always ensure you check the deadlines on LawCareers.Net first and then phone each firm before you apply just to double check their deadline. Whilst you’re at it you can also check the name of the person to address your application to (if applicable) as the names published on the internet and in other publications are sometimes out of date. You do not want to give the firm an easy reason to reject you by writing to the wrong person!

Given the increased competition for training contracts since the recession you need to work hard to ensure that your applications make you stand out from the crowd. In the current climate there are at least 2 applicants for every training contract so be sure to put the hours in on your applications.

The position is in the Legal Services Division of the council and would involve working on the varied legal matters of the council.

Training Contract Vacancy for July Start, CLC Solicitors, London

Community Law Clinic (CLC) Solicitors have announced vacancies for training contracts to start by 7 July 2010.

The firm is a one partner general practice which has a specialism for social welfare law. Areas of work include immigration, housing, debt, welfare benefits, employment, consumer, family, community care, public law. As part of this it does legal aid work also.

Previous experience in legal aid work and a 2nd language desirable but not essential.

If you are looking to train with a magic circle firm but have not secured a training contract for a 2011 start there is some good news for you. Clifford Chance have recently announced that they are to re-open their recruitment of trainees to start in August 2011 or February 2012.

Applications are to be made using their on-line application form. The deadline for applications is 23 May 2010. Assessments/interviews will take place in the last week in June.

Trainee Solicitor Vacancy, London Office of US Firm

A training contract at the London office of an American law firm is being advertised in a slightly unusual manner. It is being offered through Job Centre Plus and all applications are to go through them.

The advert says the closing date for applications is 8 May 2010 but I am told that it is actually 6 May 2010 so bear this in mind.

Application is by CV and covering letter and you will need to call Job Centre Plus to confirm details of where to apply to and to find out any other details you might need.

Due to the unusual nature of the advertising for this vacancy it may mean that less people are aware of it so it may be a good one to go for. This may not be the case but if it is then there is sure to be less competition.
